Men's Tennis Team Honored For Academic Achievement

The 1998 Hope College men's tennis team has
been honored for academic performance by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The ITA all-academic team award recognizes NCAA Division III
programs whose players maintained a cumulative grade point
average of 3.2 or above on a 4.0 scale.

In addition, recent graduates Jeff MacDoniels of Holland
(Holland HS) and Steve DeVrieze of Midland (Midland HS), were
honored as scholar-athletes for maintaining a grade point average
of 3.5 or above.

The Flying Dutchmen, coached by Steve Gorno, tied for second
place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association
(MIAA).

MacDoniels played first flight singles while DeVrieze played
third flight. In doubles, MacDoniels played first flight while
DeVrieze was second flight. Both were four-year tennis
letterwinners. MacDoniels achieved first team All-MIAA
designation for three years. His career records were 50-36 in
singles and 40-38 in doubles.

DeVrieze posted a 49-39 career singles mark and was 40-48 with
doubles partners.

Both were business administration majors and were named to
the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. DeVrieze was presented the Allan
C. Kinney award as the outstanding senior majoring in business
administration. He was also honored by the men's tennis coaches
who presented him the Lawrence Green Scholarship for academic
performance.

A total of seventeen Division III programs achieved All-
Academic status. Last spring there were 304 Division III men's
tennis teams. Also honored from the MIAA was Kalamazoo College.
