Rebecca Timmer is GTE Academic All-American

Hope College senior Rebecca Timmer of Pella, Iowa has been named a GTE Academic All-American.
A cross country and track standout who has majored in
chemistry and Spanish, Timmer has been voted to the first team in
the Fall At-Large category which honors student-athletes in
several sports from NCAA Division II and III colleges throughout
the United States. She is being honored in cross country.
The GTE Academic All-America program is sponsored by the
College Sports Information Directors Association (COSIDA).
Timmer is the second Hope athlete to achieve GTE Academic
All-America distinction this fall. Senior David DeHommel was
honored in football last fall.
She becomes the 32nd GTE honoree from Hope since 1979 and
the fourth in cross country. The other GTE Academic All-
Americans in cross country were Tauna Jecmen (1987 & 1988), Marie
Matchett (1997) and Ellen Schultz (1998).
Timmer is a two-time NCAA Division III cross country All-
American. Last fall she finished 19th in a field of 180 runners
at the national championships. She was 29th at nationals in
1997. She is a three-time Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (MIAA) all-conference cross country runner.
She also runs the distance events in track and field. This
spring she has a provisional
qualifying time for nationals in the 5,000-meter run.
As a junior she was presented the 1998 Miner Stegenga Award
which is given to a Hope student in recognition of exemplary
performance in athletics enhanced by leadership qualities
consistent with the Christian life. She is a member of the
Mortar Board national honor society and was recently inducted
into the college's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
She has been active in the college chorus and college's
Gospel Choir, is a member of the pre-med honor society and has
served as a volunteer in a tutoring assistance and lifestyle
guidance program for elementary-age children.
At Hope she has achieved a 3.99 grade point average on a 4.0
point scale. She has been named to the college's Dean's List and
the Academic Honor Roll of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (MIAA) every year.
She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David Timmer of Pella,
Iowa. She graduated from Pella Community High School in 1995.
Timmer is one of three student-athletes from the MIAA to be
named GTE at-large Academic All-Americans. The others, both from
