Faculty Recital to Feature Distinguished Guests

The final Hope College music faculty recital of the season will feature two distinguished guests as composer and cellist Kermit Moore, and alumus L. William Kuyper join the Hope faculty for the performance. The recital will be on Sunday, April 17, at 3 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Moore's "Music for Horn, Percussion, and Strings" will be performed by Kuyper and the Holland Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, April 16. Kuyper and Moore will perform together at the April 17 faculty recital along with pianists Joan Conway and Charles Aschbrenner, and cellist Richard Piippo. The quintet will perform Robert Schumann's "Andante and Variations, Op. 46."

As a cellist, Moore has performed throughout the United States and has been heard with major European orchestras. As a composer, Moore has authored solo works for cello, compositions for orchestras, a flute sonata, a timpani concerto and two string quartets. He was also a founder of the Society of Black Composers. Moore will be speaking with Hope College music students at their weekly convocation, and will meet with members of the Hope College Black Student Union.

Kuyper, a 1961 Hope graduate, is the New York Philharmonic's Principal Hornist. He joined the Philharmonic in 1969 after memberships in both the National Symphony Orchestra and the United States Marine Band. His recording projects include the Britten "Serenade" for tenor, horn and strings on the Vox label, and with fellow Philharmonic colleagues on "The Complete Works for Winds and Piano of Robert Schumann."

Also on the program is Samuel Scheidt's "Battle Suite" arranged by Philip Hones. The piece will be performed by James Bekkering, trumpet; Kent Vantil, trumpet; Rod Lowe, horn; Shannon Brunink, trombone; and Blair Martin, tuba.

Franz Schubert's "Auf dem Strom, Op. 119" will be performed by Linda LeFever Dykstra, soprano; Kuyper, horn; and Joan Conway, piano. Heitor Villa-Labos' "Fantasie Concertante for Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano" will be performed by Kristin Ward, clarinet; Steven Ward, bassoon; and Jennifer Wolfe, piano.

Nykerk Hall of Music is located on the former 12th Street between College and Columbia avenues.
