Sports Medicine Lecture Series Season Announced

The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College will present five addresses during the 2005-06 school year.

The series, which will feature a variety of topics, is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-sponsored by Shoreline Orthopaedics, Orthopaedic Associates of Grand Rapids, GRSportsCenter and the college.

All five lectures will begin at 7 p.m., and will be presented either at the college or at Mary Free Bed Hospital in Grand Rapids. Admission is free.

The series will open on Tuesday, Oct. 18, with "The Hoffman Reflex: Applications in Sports Medicine Research and Clinical Practice" at the college's Maas Center by Dr. Mitchell Cordova of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The second address, "Arthrogenic Muscle Inhibition: Sources and Implications for Rehabilitation," will be presented on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Maas Center by Dr. Riann Palmieri of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

The series will continue during the spring semester beginning on Monday, Feb. 6, with "Advances in the Management and Rehabilitation of Meniscal Injuries in Athletes" at Mary Free Bed Hospital by Dr. Timothy Henne of River Valley Orthopaedics of Grand Rapids. Dr. Steve Andriese, a physician in private practice in Grand Rapids, will present "Evaluation and Treatment of Hip Pain in Athletes" on Wednesday, March 8, at Mary Free Bed Hospital. The series will conclude its season on Monday, April 3, with "Foot Biomechanics and Lower Leg Pain," presented at the college's Maas Center by Scott Miller of GRSportsCenter.

The Maas Center is located on Columbia Avenue at 11th Street in Holland. Mary Free Bed Hospital is located at 235 Wealthy, S.E., in Grand Rapids.
