Visiting Writers Series to Host Authors on Dec. 1

The Hope College Visiting Writers Series will present memoirist and poet Sebastian Matthews and poet A. Van Jordan on Thursday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Knickerbocker Theatre.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Author of the memoir, "In My Father's Foosteps," Matthews is also the editor of "Rivendell," a literary journal that includes many genres to create a multilingual conversation.

Matthews was recently named Bread Loaf Scholar in Nonfiction. He is the co-editor, with Stanley Plumly, of "Search Party: Collected Poems of William Matthews." His poems have appeared in "The Atlantic Monthly," "New England Reviews," "Post Road" and "The Seneca Review." He teaches at Warren Wilson College.

Author of award-winning "Rise" and "M-A-C-N-O-L-I-A," Van Jordan has served as the Joan Beebe Graduate Teaching Fellow, taught at Prince George's Community College, and has served two years with the AmeriCorps.

He has also been awarded a D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities Literary Fellowship. One of Hope College's favorite poets, Van Jordan is back by popular demand. His is described as an "inventive poet" by "The Washington Post."

The reading will be preceded at 6:30 p.m. by the Hope College Jazz Chamber Ensemble.

The Knickerbocker Theatre is located at 86 East 8th St. in downtown Holland.
