The MIAA champion Hope baseball and softball teams were among the nation's top NCAA Division III teams in several statistical categories this spring.
The Flying Dutch won their first MIAA softball crown in a decade, winning a school-record 33 games, while the Flying Dutchmen, behind a late-season surge, gained a baseball co-championship with Adrian and posted a 26-14 season mark.
The teams excelled on defense. The softball team ranked 20th among all DIII teams in fielding percentage (.966) while the baseball team was 44th in the country (.959). Individually, junior Mike VanderVelde ranked 15th among all DIII players in the toughest to strikeout category (4Ks in 154ABs).
