Hope Sets Sixth Consecutive Enrollment Record

For the sixth consecutive year Hope College has enrolled a record number of students, topping 3,200 students for the second time in the college's history.

Hope has enrolled 3,226 students this fall, 23 more than last year's previous high of 3,203. Hope has set records for overall enrollment in nine of the past 10 years.

"I think students find that the environment here is very conducive to a good college education," said Jon Huisken, dean for academic services and registrar at Hope. "Our combination of an excellent academic program and very attractive spiritual dimension are unbeatable and very attractive for students today."

There are 819 first-time students at the college this year, the largest total in the college's history. The overall student body includes three of Hope's four largest first-time enrollments: 781 in the fall of 2004, 775 in the fall of 2005 and 778 last year.

The student body consists of 1,329 men and 1,897 women from 45 states and 31 foreign countries.

The enrollment by class, with last year's class in parentheses, is: freshmen, 847 (805); sophomores, 745 (763); juniors, 718 (713); seniors, 825 (828); and special students, 91 (94).

Students transferring to Hope from other colleges and universities total 57, compared with 70 in 2006. There are 125 students in off-campus programs, compared to 118 last year.

The largest representation is from Michigan with 2,237 students. States represented with 10 or more students include Illinois, 390; Indiana, 123; Ohio, 83; Minnesota, 46; New York and Wisconsin, 36 each; California, 31; Iowa, 24; New Jersey, 20; Texas, 16; Colorado, 14; Florida, 13; Missouri and Pennsylvania, 12 each; and Virginia, 11.

Foreign countries represented in the student body include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, Haiti, India, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, Nigeria, Romania, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Trinidad, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uruguay and Vietnam.

Hope College was chartered in 1866 and is affiliated with the Reformed Church in America (RCA). The college offers courses in 89 majors leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
