Hope to Award Honorary Degree to Joel Bouwens

Hope College will award an honorary degree to Joel Bouwens of Holland, former chairperson of the college’s Board of Trustees, on Sunday, May 6, during the college’s Commencement ceremony.

Bouwens will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree for distinguished service to the college.

Bouwens chaired the college’s Board of Trustees from August of 2003 through July of 2011  He continues to serve on the board, which he joined in 1993.

Through his years of service on the board, he was a member of the Steering Committee of the college’s “Hope in the Future” comprehensive campaign of the early 1990s and on the cabinet of the college’s “Legacies: A Vision of Hope” comprehensive campaign of 2000 through 2005.  He also chaired the 10-member search committee that selected Dr. James E.
