The Hope College Great Performance Series will present Rennie Harris Puremovement on Thursday-Friday, Oct. 11-12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland.
Rennie Harris Puremovement (RHPM) has emerged as an international hip-hop dance ambassador. In a society where hip-hop is often portrayed as a violent, undisciplined counterculture, RHPM deconstructs popular perception of this medium, expanding and challenging the boundaries and definitions of hip-hop in general.
“The New York Times” has said that Rennie Harris “knows how to move bodies in space, how to layer his phrases and, above all, how to make dancers look good.”
The goal of the company is to provide audiences with a sincere view of the essence and spirit of hip-hop, rather than the commercially exploited stereotypes most often presented by the media.
Harris, a North Philadelphia native, founded RHPM based on the belief that hip-hop is the most important original expression of a new generation, with the unique ability to express universal themes that extend beyond racial, religious, and economic boundaries.
Hope College faculty member Crystal Frazier is a long-time member of RHPM. Frazier has been seen in “DANCE Magazine” and has appeared in the movie “Beloved,” the VH1 VOGUE Fashion Awards with Macy Grey and the television series “Monk.” She is both a choreographer and dancer.
The DeVos Fieldhouse is located at 222 Fairbanks Ave., between Ninth and 11th streets. The Knickerbocker Theatre is located at 86 E. Eighth St.
