Landfills play a critical role in ensuring public health and the environmental sustainability of our society.  This talk will explore modern landfills and describe how they are designed, permitted, and operated here in West Michigan.  The Kent County Landfill will be used as an example and several sub-systems used for methane capture, electrical power generation, and stormwater management will be discussed.   Solid waste management is a major sub-discipline of civil and environmental engineering, but other disciplines such as mechanical and electrical engineering are becoming more engaged in landfill management.
