The H2 Dance Company will present its premiere concert on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 25-26, and Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2, at 8 p.m. at Hope College at the Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland.
H2 Dance Company is a semi-professional repertory dance company affiliated with the Hope College Department of Dance. It provides professional dance performance and touring experiences to its company members, as well as engaging the community in artistically and educationally diverse dance performances.
H2 prides itself on presenting works that reflect all areas of dance (ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and hip hop), while still maintaining the traditions or dance and presenting choreography that is fresh/contemporary. Artistic director Matthew Farmer, who created the company and concert with assistant artistic director Crystal Frazier, noted that audiences will be exposed to a variety of dance.
“There is something for every lover of dance in this concert,” he said. “If you want athleticism, it is there. If you want artistry, it is there.”
Guest choreographer Sharon Wong has created a full -company piece that reflects the strength and versatility of the dancers and explores the themes of oral traditions. Guest choreographer Kristen Farmer’s piece pushes artistic boundaries. Crystal Frazier’s afro-fusion employs fast paced rhythmic movement and athletic jumps, while her hip hop piece has a tension that captures the edginess of grit and containment. Matthew Farmer created three pieces for the performance. His two contemporary ballet pieces contrast one another in theme, feel and atmosphere, but remain true to lines and form of the style, while his tango-inspired piece has a fire that is contagious.
