Math Colloquium: "Polyhedra: A journey from Plato and his solids to regular polytopes in higher dimensions" by Dr. James Turner, Calvin College

Polyhedra have been an ongoing source of inspiration in the development of mathematics from ancient times to today. In this talk, we will look at the beautiful topic of regular polyhedra, from the role it played in Plato's cosmology to their modern generalization as regular polytopes. In the process, we will explore the concept of higher dimensions through the method of analogy, guided along the way by such historical figures as Plato, L. Euler, L. Schlafli and H.S.M. Coxeter.
