Meeting Minutes (Fall 2002 - Spring 2003)

September 23 October 14 November 11

September 23

1. Taco dinner at Dr. Barney's house

a) Tentative date: Thursday, October 17 (We will discuss more at the next meeting).

2. Science with Middle School Students

a) November 2 (9:00-11:30 am), Saturday

b) Six people are needed. These are the people who have volunteered so far: Jody, Jennie, Ryan, Karina, Kate.

c) If you want to help out, contact Jody for more information.

3. Speakers: Biology department wants Tri-Beta to contribute ideas about who we want to bring in as speakers.

a) Budget is not clear yet.

b) Think of someone in the areas that you are interested in, or your areas of research.

c) Lunch this week with speaker: Jennie, Karina, Amelia.

4. Publications: Carla Vissers in the English Department wants more science students submitting creative writing to Opus.

a) Contact professor Vissers if you are interested.

5. Website: ideas for what we want to put on our website:

a) Meeting minutes

b) Meetings: time and date

c) Link to national office

d) Links to random biological websites

e) GRE information and GRE website (MCAT info and amcas website)

f) Graduate school registry information

g) Pictures of events and people

h) List of members (associate and full)

i) Calendar of events

6. Dues: 15 dollars to all members (get the money to Matt Teusink)

7. Announcements from Dr. Eckerle

a) Speaker this week: Dr. Peter Bednekoff (Eastern Michigan University)

b) Michigan Census Herbs Count: contact Dr. Winnett-Murray if interested

1) Can count as community service hours, Tuesday (9/24/02): 6:00-10:00p.m.

8. Meeting next time: Monday, October 7 at 9:30 pm in the bird room (room 151)

9. If you have scientific papers that you want to have published but cannot be published because you don't have enough data, consider submitting it to www.jyi.org

a) Contact Tim Stowe for more information.


October 14

1. Dues: All members, associate and full, have to pay dues in the amount of 15 dollars.

a) Dues are due at the next meeting.

2. New email: Tri-Beta now has an official email account tribeta@hope.edu

a) All future announcements regarding Tri-Beta will be sent from this email account.

3. Seminar this week: This week we are having a seminar as a science division; there will be no lunch with the seminar speaker.

4. Taco Dinner at Dr. Barney\rquote s house:

a) We are meeting at 5:45 in Peale (in front of the biology department).

b) We will be leaving at 6:00 pm.

c) We will assume that you have your own ride if you are not there by 6:00.

d) Directions were given at the meeting tonight.

e) If you still need directions to Dr. Barney's house, contact Ryan Hamby.

f) Those planning to attend are: Aaron, Jody, Julie, Ryan, Isabelle, Kate, Steph, Karina, Melissa Sulok, Amelia, Jennie,

Kelley, Seth, Matt, and Robert.

g) There will also be 23 faculty and family members.

5. Announcements from Dr. Eckerle:

a) Induction: We are planning on an earlier induction ceremony this year. Will discuss more about this later.

b) 5K Run: It's time to start thinking about the run and a tentative date for the run.

c) Email: Biology department will be sending announcements to the new tri-beta email address if the department or

any of the faculty members have any announcements to make to tri-beta.

6. Next meeting: October 28; We are planning a movie night for the next meeting. We will have our meeting before we start the movie.

a) Time, place, and the movie: TBA

b) If you have any suggestion for the movie, send an email to tribeta@hope.edu

7. Seminar speaker: As discussed earlier in the year, Tri-Beta should try to invite one seminar speaker this year.

Any scientist that you admire and would like to meet, please suggest to one of the Tri-Beta officers.


November 11

1. Seminar Speaker: We decided to invite Dr. David Anderson from Wake Forest University.

a) If we are unable to invite him, due to schedule conflicts, other alternatives will be sought.

2. Dance Marathon:

a) Dancer: Isabelle

b) Moralers are needed

3. Dues: $20 for full and associate members.

a) If you have yet to turn in your dues, turn it in ASAP.

b) It's almost the end of fall semester. We are not naming people right now.

However, this is your last chance before we do start naming people.

4. Christmas Party: We are planning on having a Christmas Party.

a) Karaoke is the current idea. If we are having a karaoke party, faculty will be invited.

b) If you have any other ideas, let Ryan Hamby know.

5. Lunch with Speaker:

a) The seminar this Friday is on the Genetics of Deafness.

b) If you are interested in going to lunch with the seminar speaker, sign up in the biology office.
