I was academic director for the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation National Leadership Institutes for High School Biology Teachers from 1991-1997. As such I am very interested in promoting fun, active science learning in as many high schools as possible. With help from NSF, I am now involved in forming high school-college partnerships. Also, I direct pre-college outreach programs at Hope College which are funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. These include a 6th/7th Grade Science Recreation Program and a 7th/8th Grade Science Demonstrators Program and a 9th/10th Grade Research Club. Alos, am also doing a series of technology professional development with the Hope College Faculty. See the Web page FindingNew Pencils: Appropriate Integration of Technology and Teaching for moreinformation.
I have a wife and three children, all four of which are interesting. I like to explore the cooking of other cultures, especially China, Korea and India, either by cooking the food myself or eating somebody else's cooking. My non-work reading includes a variety of medieval mysteries (Peters, Doherty, Neuman, Frazier, Sedley, Robb, Marston, Eyre) and books about George Washington. We like to travel, and so we do.
