Debbie J. Swarthout
Assistant Professor of Biology
Research Interests
My research focuses on investigating plant growth and development in response to environmental stress.
I am interested in gaining a mechanistic understanding of the internal mobilization of metabolites that
result in enhanced water-use efficiency in plants. We have been studying the growth and development of tall fescue
grasses under varying water and nutrient availability. I have interests in blending scientific research and teaching
through the use of digital art, water-color painting and music to create video clips that can be used by teachers to
demonstrate how plants grow and develop as they transgress through the environment.
