Independent Study of Biology

Biology 390

A library-based research problem which provides the opportunity for the qualified student to extend his or her interest beyond the limits of particular course offerings.

Projects must be arranged individually with an individual faculty member and formally approved by the Chairperson of the Biology Department. A written proposal outlining the studies to be undertaken and the number of credit hours desired must be submitted to and approved by the Chairperson of the Department during the semester prior to enrolling in the course.

A review paper is required. It should be a scientific review paper written in a style appropriate for submission to a review journal (e.g. Quarterly Review of Biology; Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics, etc.). The student should specify the review journal format used and the paper should thoroughly review the topic of interest. The length of the paper should be at least 10 pages for each hour of credit.

The grade for the course will be determined by the Departmental Chairperson as well as the individual faculty person serving as the instructor (if this is not the Chairperson) and will be determined by the quality of the research paper.

Students must be Biology majors and must have completed the biology core courses to receive credit for Independent Study. Normally, topics covered in electives offered by the department will not be approved for Independent Study. One to three credits are possible.
