Summer Science and More Camps 2010Hope College is offering exciting opportunities this summer for students to explore the wonderful world of science and more. The programs will feature “hands-on,” interactive investigations designed to teach scientific concepts in a FUN yet challenging way. A camper manual (for use in the camp) and a parent manual will be provided for each session. For more information, visit our website at www.hope.edu/camps/science.html. We currently have 50% scholarships available for sessions #34-49. Please provide the name, EMAIL ADDRESS nad phone number of a non-family member that can verify your need. (Please do not provide school teachers/administrators since school is no longer in session.) Only one scholarship per camper is available.
If You or Your Company Are Currently Blessed and can help provide assistance for other families, your generosity would be greatly appreciated...100% of your donation will go to a camper in need. Hope College is a 501.c3 institution & your contribution may be tax deductible at both the federal AND state level. Camp Costs May Be Tax Deductible as an educational or child care expense. Please contact your tax professional to determine if you are eligible. Lunch Hour Supervision is available from 12-1 Monday through Thursday. The cost is $12 per student per week. Campers MUST bring their own lunch. Call 616-395-7628. The Snack Shack Is Back...There will be a snack break in the middle of each camp. Campers may bring their own snacks or purchase from the Snack Shack! Many healthy options are available. Week 1
NEW Session 1: PRINCESS Science Being a princess is not all tiaras and glittery gowns. It takes a lot to run a kingdom. Come explore the magical world of gems, color spectrums, flight and fashion through the eyes of science Session 2: Lego I RCX (FULL/CLOSED) Welcome to the exciting world of Lego Robotics. Get an introduction to simple machines, robot construction, programming and teamwork as your group builds robots & completes challenges. Session 3: Super Science Sampler Looking for a mix? This camp will have a different theme each day as we highlight the favorite experiments from other 3rd-5th grade camps of CSI, Spy Club, Club Vet and Fantastic Flight. NEW Session 4: GEMS Time Travel Get ready to go back in time and learn how science has changed. See how scientists such as Galileo, Newton, and Einstein made discoveries we take for granted today. NEW Session 5: Science of Transformers Calling all autobots.. “roll out” as we explore machines, robots and motion. Learn the science behind the awesome world of transformers to help protect the second happiest place in the universe. Session 6: Lego I NXT (FULL/CLOSED) Welcome to the exciting world of Lego Robotics, NXT style. Get an introduction to machines, robot construction, programming and teamwork as your group builds robots and completes challenges. Session 7: Body Shop Future doctors, nurses, and health care professionals...discover how the body works through hands-on dissections of animals and organs. Learn what keeps our bodies systems healthy and strong. NEW Session 8: Renewable Energy Technology-Girls Only The future of energy is changing rapidly. Learn about the science of green as we explore wind, solar, fuel cell, electric vehicles, hybrids and other green technologies.
Week 2
Session 9: Super Science Sampler
(FULL/CLOSED) Looking for a mix? This camp will have different themes each day from our K-2 camps….Club Vet, Creepy Crawlies, Prehistoric Planet, and Pirates Cove. Session 10: Fantastic Flight (FULL/CLOSED) Embark upon an aerial odyssey like no other! Master the forces of flight as you discover the secret habits of amazing flying animals, and take to the sky with hot air balloons, airplanes, and your own rocket. Session 11: Fantastic Flight (FULL/CLOSED) Embark upon an aerial odyssey like no other! Session 12: Techno Music (FULL/CLOSED) Explore music technology at its finest! Play electronic keyboards, compose your own music with Garageband software and burn it to a CD. Make a DVD movie of photos with your own music in the background. Learn how fun music theory can be with Music Ace Maestro software. Session 13: Classic Cartooning (FULL/CLOSED) Learn the basics of cartoon strip and panel development. Create characters, add expressions and learn inking techniques. A treasury will be assembled at the end of the class. Returnees will do a more advanced project. Session 14: NEW - TV Production (CANCELLED) Campers will explore the fast paced world of TV Production from behind the scenes to in front of the camera...including equipment, techniques and storyline in Hopes state-of-the-art studio in the Martha Miller Center. Session 15: Tykes Lego (FULL/CLOSED) Get ready to build awesome Lego structures as you are introduced to the science of simple machines, the mechanics of motion and the control of forces. Take your knowledge and skills to new heights as we engage in daily challenges and construction. Session 16: VideoGame Making (FULL/CLOSED) Learn to design and modify your own exciting arcade style video games...control characters, objects and outcomes as you increase the difficulty level and add features. Create your own game to play at home. (Not Mac compatible) Campers can bring a 1GB flash drive or buy one at camp ($10). Session 17: Lego II RCX (FULL/CLOSED) Get a continuation of machine mechanics, robot construction and programming with the RCX robots and all new challenges. You do not need to have taken Lego I RCX or NXT. Session 18: Techno Music (FULL/CLOSED) Explore music technology at its finest! Play electronic keyboards, compose your own music with Garageband software and burn it to a CD. Make a DVD movie of photos with your own music in the background. Learn how fun music theory can be with Music Ace Maestro software. Session 19: Comics, Manga, & Graphic Novels… Hone your graphic story telling skills and create a collective graphic novel. Comic book, manga and basic graphic novel illustrations highlighted. Returnees welcome for more advanced exercises and a final project. NEW Session 20: GEMS Get ready to learn more about the greatest scientists of all time! Learn about how scientists became superstars and recreate some of the experiments that made their names famous around the world.
Week 3

Session 22: Harry Potter (FULL/CLOSED) Upon arrival Monday, you’ll be “sorted” into houses and whisked away to the magical world of science-Harry Potter style. Explore experiments that illuminate the “science” in Globlets of Fire and the Half-Blood Prince. Session 23: How Things Work (FULL/CLOSED) Wonder what’s “inside the box” that makes things work? This camp will cover basic mechanics and electronics as we learn how computers, cameras, radios, remotes and cell phones work. Session 24: Building Virtual Worlds (FULL/CLOSED) This camp will introduce students to computer programming techniques through the use of Alice, an interactive programming environment. Students will create stories that take place in 3D “worlds” using a large gallery of characters while adding their own imagination and creativity to the mix. Session 25: Science of Art (FULL/CLOSED) Explore the awesome world of art as you create your own masterpieces and learn the science of painting, ceramics, printing, photography and sculpture. Session 26: Harry Potter (FULL/CLOSED) Upon arrival Monday, you’ll be “sorted” into houses and whisked away to the magical world of science-Harry Potter style. Explore experiments that illuminate the “science” in Globlets of Fire and the Half-Blood Prince Session 27: Pirates Cove (FULL/CLOSED) Explore the awesome world under the sea. Learn about the marine creatures that make their homes beneath the surface. See how they live, “breathe,” eat, survive & find some treasure too.
Week 4
Session 28: Creepy Crawlies (FULL/CLOSED) Hakuna Matata is the theme for this camp as we explore the awesome world of bugs. From butterflies to beetles, spiders to wasps and things in between. Session 29: Robotech NXT (FULL/CLOSED) This Lego camp will use the NXT system to challenge your teamwork and creativity. More complex tasks will take your robotic skills higher. Session 30: Kitchen Science (FULL/CLOSED) Ever wonder why slushies don’t freeze? Investigate the science of baking bread and trick your senses by making warm apple pie with no apples! Learn how to cook and develop healthy eating habits. Session 31: VideoGame (FULL/CLOSED) Learn to design and modify your own exciting arcade style video games...control characters, objects and outcomes as you increase the difficulty level and add features. Create your own game to play at home. (Not Mac compatible) Campers can bring a 1GB flash drive or buy one at camp ($10) Session 32: Tykes Lego (FULL/CLOSED) Get ready to build awesome Lego structures as you are introduced to the science of simple machines, the mechanics of motion and the control of forces. Session 33: Disgusting (FULL/CLOSED) You can really dig into this type of science and discover animals from the inside out. Apply dissection techniques to organisms such as earthworms, crayfish, sharks, and pigs as we compare them to our own bodies.

Discover the world of dinosaurs as we learn the types, where they lived and what they ate. Explore rock formations, volcanoes, bones & fossils. Session 35: Club Vet (FULL/CLOSED) Explore the exciting world of animal science and care. If you want to own a pet, be a vet or work/volunteer in a pet related job, then definitely come learn about animal habitats, nutrition and health care. Session 36: Club Vet (FULL/CLOSED) Explore the exciting world of animal science and care. Session 44: Spy Club (FULL/CLOSED) Get ready to explore what it takes to be a Secret Agent and learn the science of undercover intelligence. Basic training covers the theory and practice of surveillance, night-vision, stealth, perception/awareness, coding, self-defense, teamwork and critical thinking. Session 45: Spy Club Get ready to explore what it takes to be a Secret Agent and learn the science of undercover intelligence. Fingerprinting, DNA analysis, blood typing and more. New Session 49: GEMS I Wanna be a Scientist (FULL/CLOSED) Do you dream of being a scientist? In this camp you can learn the scientific method: how to develop and test a hypothesis using experiments. Learn if you have what it takes to be a scientist.
