Summer 2008 Science Camps

Hope College offers exciting opportunities for children 4 years old to 9th grade (Fall ’08) to explore the wonderful world of science. The programs feature hands-on investigations designed to teach scientific concepts in a FUN yet challenging way. A camper manual and a parent manual will be provided for each session.

Lunch hour (12:00-1:00). We provide supervision for campers in both a morning and an afternoon session. The cost is only $10/week for each child. Campers must bring their own lunch.

The ever popular “Snack Shack” returns with lots of choices so kids start saving your allowance, you won’t want to miss all the cool stuff. 

Thanks to Gentex, need based SCHOLARSHIPS are available.

Camp tee’s can be purchased for $8 (Y-S, Y-L, A-M or A-XL only).

Session 4: Crime Scene Investigation

How do modern day detectives put the pieces of a crime scene puzzle together?  Find out what types of tricks and high-tech gadgets are used as you solve an all-new crime.  Fingerprinting, DNA analysis and blood typing are just a few skills we’ll learn. 

Session 5: Disgusting Dissection

You can really dig into this type of science and discover animals from the inside out.  This camp applies dissection techniques to organisms such as earthworms, crayfish, sharks, pigs and rats and compares them to our own bodies.

From the rain forest to the desert, the bottom of the ocean to your own back yard, explore the amazing diversity of life on our planet. We will look at plants and animals of the world's biomes, learn about how humans interact with these environments, and even take field trips to discover West Michigan's freshwater and forest ecosystems.

The world seems to be getting smaller and smaller, and communication skills are more important.  This class will prime and equip students for language learning and comprehension.  Spanish and French are highlighted with many other multi-lingual exercises.

Discover the fascinating prehistoric world of dinosaurs, rocks and plants.  Learn about types of dinosaurs, where they lived and what they ate.  You’ll also explore rock formations, meteors, volcanoes, asteroids, real dinosaur bones and fossils as we dig up the past. 

Session 14: Shipwreck Detective

Set sail as we cover the globe and explore eleven shipwrecks from 70 B.C. to WWII in search of treasure.  You’ll learn about diving and marine life, ship building, maps, navigation, history, archaeology and much more.

Hakuna Matata is the theme for this camp as we explore the awesome world of bugs. From butterflies to beetles, spiders to wasps and everything in between.  Learning to identify bugs and creating your own collection will be just the beginning in this slimy yet satisfying camp.

Sports themes will be used throughout this week of math enrichment activities. We’ll explore math topics at a deeper level using hands-on activities and challenging games. If you loved math before, this camp will exponentially expand your problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Explore the race to the White House through polling methods, statistics, the electoral college and the popular vote.  Students will also be introduced to campaign issues, run a mock election and much more.  There is no better time to investigate politics through the complex election system and become informed citizens.

If you watch CSI and wondered how those machines do what they do, this is the camp for you!  Learn forensics hands-on as we gather evidence, analyze it and solve the crime.
