Annual Report Text, 2001-2002Dr. Sanford found her way back to Hope after her sabbatical leave at the Gentex Corporation in Zeeland, MI, where she worked on the development of new materials for use in electrochromic mirrors. Her work there has already resulted in a patent contribution. Once back at Hope Dr. Sanford picked up her [1.1.1]propellane work and a new project on light-emitting electrochemical cells with Betty Tang ('02), Laurie McNamara ('03) and Jessica Case ('02). This spring she found it especially exciting to see Betty Tang graduate because she had worked with Dr. Sanford since she was a junior in high school. Betty went on to a very productive internship at Gentex followed by graduate school at UCLA-Dr. Sanford's alma mater. This summer Natalie Hosking ('04), Chris Sterling ('04), David Pridmore ('04) and Rosalind Roa ('05) took over and kept Dr. Sanford hopping. Dr. Sanford also reached a new milestone-her first students are now graduating from medical and graduate school and she finds their success very rewarding. Dr. Sanford, her husband Jim Timmermann, Daniel (5) and Eleanor (3) also had a busy year on the home front. In January they welcomed home Evelyn Elizabeth who was born July 26, 2001 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Evelyn is as cute as button and adds a few inches to her height with a head full of curls. |
