Annual Report Text, 1994-1995Dr. Sanford joined the Hope College faculty in August 1994. Dr. Sanford completed her doctoral work in molecular recognition at UCLA in 1992 under the direction of Dr. Francois N. Diederich. In 1994, she completed her post-doctoral studies in polymer chemistry at Cornell University with Dr. Jean M. J. Frechet. During the fall semester, Dr. Sanford taught Organic Chemistry Laboratory, set up her laboratory at Hope and wrote research proposals. In the spring semester, she taught the second semester of Organic Chemistry Lecture and Organic Chemistry Laboratory. In addition, five students joined her in initiating research in two different research projects--the synthesis of substituted [1.1.1]propellanes and functionalizing molecular tubes made from cyclodextrins. Both projects use concepts from molecular recognition to build macromolecules that will be used as new materials. Dr. Sanford's research is currently supported by the NSF, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, the Howard Hughes Foundation and the Petroleum Research Fund. This summer Dr. Sanford will delve into her research with the help of four research students--3 from Hope and one from the University of Michigan. In the fall she will be teaching Organic Chemistry Lecture and Laboratory. In addition she will also be initiated into the ways of Hope College by the Chemistry Club as their new advisor. |
