Annual Report Text, 1997-1998Dr. Sanford has had another busy year in the lab and classroom. Last summer the group made significant progress toward the synthesis of substituted[1.1.1]propellanes and poly(arylenevinylenes). It was a fun and productive summer of lab work with Carrie Langstraat '99, Angela Perkins '98, Larry Mann '97, Irina Arzumanova '99, Aimee Kubasiak '99 and Betty Tang, a Holland High student. Betty even decided to come to Hope for college. This summer Aimee Kubasiak '99, Angela Perkins '98, Betty Tang '02 Will get research rolling with Kate Berghorst '00 and Kristie Hertz (Davidson College '00). The organic groups have a lot to learn this summer with a new NMR and GC/MS. To cap the summer experience Dr. Sanford's group is road tripping to Boston to present posters at the ACS meeting. Dr. Sanford taught "Super Chem" this year for the first time and had fun teaching students all the organic chemistry she wished she had known before going to graduate school. She also was the lab director for both semesters of organic lab. She kept up the tradition of killer lab exams and introduced students to on-line STN searches for independent projects - this year's theme was medicinal chemistry. |
