Annual Report Text, 1999-2000

This year was a very productive one for Dr. Sanford. The professional highlight of the year was receiving tenure with promotion to associate professor. This followed a busy year teaching organic lecture and lab and having three manuscripts accepted for publication. Fortunately Dr. Sanford's new baby Eleanor Rose waited to arrive until the day after her research students Kate Berghorst ('00), Julia Koeppe ('00), Jeff Petkus ('01) and Betty Tang ('02) finished their work. Eleanor Rose began her career in chemistry as the youngest NSF panelist ever when she accompanied Dr. Sanford to review proposals at the NSF this fall. This spring Dr. Sanford has been busy teaching organic lecture and laboratory and working on her [1.1.1]propellane research.

This summer Dr. Sanford will be working with Julia Koeppe ('00), Jeff Petkus ('01) and Betty Tang ('02) on the propellane project and attending the NSF Workshop on Physical Organic Chemistry. She will also be designing a new course in polymer chemistry for non-majors. In the fall she will be on sabbatical leave at Gentex Corporation in Zeeland working on electrochromic devices.

On the home front, 3 year old Daniel keeps both his mom and dad busy and loves playing with little cars. Eleanor, 9 months, is a very happy baby who does not require much sleep and likes to chew on little cars.
