1995-1996 Annual Report TextDr. Williams taught several sections of beginning chemistry, as well as coordinating the course for the majors and teaching and coordinating the labs in the pre-nursing course. In addition, he taught his popular course for liberal arts majors on radioactive nuclear waste. His work with this class, his many teacher workshops on radioactive waste and his work as Chairman of Michigan's Board of Governors of the International Low-Level Radioactive Waste Research and Education (ANS) Institute led to his being honored by the Michigan section of the American Nuclear Society as Nuclear Professional of the Year. This honor was bestowed by the National ANS President who was visiting Ann Arbor at the time of the dinner honoring Dr. Williams. Dr. Williams continued his service as Faculty Secretary. He edited five chemistry textbooks and reviewed papers or an inorganic synthesis journal. Other activities included writing teacher certification exams for the state of Michigan and seeing two of his publications make it into print; one in the Journal of Chemical Education and one in Proceeding of the ANS International Meeting on High-Level Radioactive Waste Conference in 1995. In the summer of 1995, Dr. Williams joined a Smithsonian sponsored tour of the Trinity Site - the site of the first Atomic Bomb Explosion - on the 50th anniversary of that explosion. This led to six public lectures on the experience. Dr. Williams also enjoys teaching his senior seminar course "Science and Human Values" and serving as the "Answer Man" for science questions called in by area teachers. |
