INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Erin Schumaker, 2008 Graduate
Not-For-Profit Organization

March of Dimes

“During my internship with the March of Dimes I learned how to work with all kinds of people. Working in groups for a school project is one thing, but learning to work with people in a professional environment has a lot more at stake and I found myself learning how to respect each person and personality no matter what job we had to accomplish.

Another thing I learned was how to become as efficient as possible in what I was doing; especially in my writing. There is not a lot of room for wasted time or empty words in the professional world and I found myself learning how to get to the point of what I was doing, saying, or writing, so I could be sure I would not be unintentionally wasting anyone's time.

As a final note, there was nothing really as valuable as observing how a not for profit organization works. They have so many struggles, but seeing how much they believe in what they are doing in order to overcome the struggles was a very exciting process to watch.

Overall I loved my internship, even when it was hard or frustrating. I learned that I could not walk out on them and I truly learned what it means to stick something out no matter what and to do your best through that process.”
