INTERNSHIP
PROGRAM
advantages
of an academic internship
Students and host organizations alike benefit from participating
in an academic internship program. Based on our mission, recent recognition,
and strength in research, the Communication Department prepares students
for our rapidly-changing society with important transferable skills: critical
thinking and problem-solving, diversity education, analysis of quantitative
and qualitative information, and effective oral and written communication
of ideas. As interns, juniors and seniors are well poised to bring value
to a host organization, they gain valuable work experience while building
the bridge between their academic coursework and the professional world,
and they solidify career decisions. Thus, an internship is a vital communication
degree requirement. For full information about the program, all students
should read the Internship Handbook, found on the department website.
program
application overview
Before applying to the Communication Department academic internship
program, all Communication majors are required to attend an internship
workshop along with meeting the remaining program requirements listed
to the left. Workshops, held in the first half of both fall and spring
semesters, introduce students to the steps to meet this major requirement
and resources for preparing for an internship. Important features
of the Internship Handbook and the internship syllabus are covered
during workshops. These resources also are located on the Communication
Department website.
If a student’s major GPA is not at or above 2.7 when reaching
junior status, the student should meet with his or her academic advisor
as soon as possible to discuss meeting this requirement. Additionally,
off-campus experiential learning programs, such as The Philadelphia
Center or an internship or 300-level communication course in a campus
sponsored study abroad program, may be substituted for the COMM399
Communication Internship credits. These options are subject to approval
by the Internship Director. Make an appointment to meet with the
director to discuss these options before enrolling.
Creating a LinkedIn professional profile and joining the Hope College
Communication Department group after declaring the major, keeps students
up-to-date with announcements about internship opportunities specifically
geared toward the communication field, but it also allows students
to explore what other communication students, present and past, have
experienced and to network with them.
