INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Tara Kuhnlein, 2008 Graduate
Mass Media

WZZM TV-13

“As a communications major and creative writing minor, I was able to utilize many Hope classes while participating in my internship such as, Public Presentations, Print Media, all Creative Writing course, and Task Group Leadership. This last course is the course that directly led me to my internship and job at WZZM 13. This course surfaced my natural-born leadership skills and taught me how to successfully work with others – so, so, so important – especially in the workplace.

This course also asked me to interview someone that I felt was a leader in the community. In a result, I set up an interview with Catherine Behrendt from "Take Five" at WZZM. After interviewing her, she offered me the internship position- which 4 months later has left me with my dream job as the co-host of a show and a reporter in a Top 50 market! You just never know how something as simple as an ordinary assignment/task can truly change your life.

Although my Hope courses were helpful, there were so many more specific skills that I absolutely had to learn in order to succeed in the television industry. During my internship, I learned how to shoot stories with an HD news camera as well as how to edit the video that I shot. I learned how to write packages and I learned how to act and talk on air – none of which I learned in the classroom.

Also, don’t be afraid to take an internship. As an intern, you aren’t expected to be an expert; you just have to want to learn. When I took the internship at WZZM 13, I didn’t know anything about the TV industry – but by taking that chance – I asked a million questions and learned all that I could learn. By that, I truly found my calling. You also meet many very resourceful people who can help you in the future.

Utilize your resources at Hope and take on internships. I promise whether the experience is good or bad, you will learn something about yourself, which takes you one step closer to finding out what you want to be or where you want to go professionally after graduation. :) ”
