Labs and Hardware

The Computer Science department maintains three labs of computers for student use. The first, located in VanZoren B24, contains 12 Unix workstations and is used for classes throughout most of the day, but is available for use by students during the evenings. VanderWerf 115 contains XX Unix workstations as well, and is available for student use throughout the day. Each of the Unix workstations is also equipped with
a SunPCi card which allows you to run Windows 2000 while logged in to the Solaris machines. Finally, the Advanced Lab contains several Linux and Windows machines used for special student projects with the permission of a faculty member, and is located in VWF 1XX.

Computer Science students who are currently enrolled in a CSCI class can have receive an "after hours" card allowing them to remain in the VZN and VWF labs 24 hours a day. You can get these cards from the faculty member teaching your course. Note that you will also have to have your access card activated to allow you to get into the building after hours.

Software Available

The Solaris workstations are equipped with a wide variety of software to help you in your course work and research. Here is a non-exhaustive list of applications and utilities that are available:

  • Text Editors: textedit, emacs, vi, nedit
  • Programming Languages: Java (command line and BlueJ), C/C++, PERL, LISP, Prolog
  • Web Browser: Netscape 7.0
  • Standard Unix utilities: grep (search for text in files), find (locate files), ls (list files in a directory), ps (show currently running processes) and many more too numerous to mention

When running the SunPC application on the Solaris workstation, the following software is available:

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook)
  • Microft Visio (Great for drawing diagrams!)
  • Microsoft Visual Studio (C/C++/Visual Basic) program development
    environment)
  • Netscape 6.2 and Internet Explorer 6
  • vi and emacs (if you just can't live without them on a PC
    environment!)
