London June Term 2013
NEW THIS YEAR!
MARKETS AND MORALITY BOOK CLUB
|
Fourteen students from across campus have joined
Prof. Sarah
Estelle for the first year of Hope College’s Markets
and Morality reading group.
This new student organization encourages
students to examine the interplay of market forces through
the lens of moral thought, including the precepts of the historic
Christian faith, and will facilitate a rigorous conversation
about whether markets can contribute to human flourishing.
The discussion will emanate from the basics of economic thinking,
though students from all disciplines and perspectives were
encouraged to join.
The first meeting of the group featured
a presentation by Prof. Jack Mulder of the Philosophy department
about competing views of ethics and morality. After a second
introductory meeting outlining a basic understanding of market
theory, the group will together select scholarly books from
different perspectives to study and discuss biweekly.
The school
year will culminate with a day-long visit from a scholar with
related expertise. In addition to his/her formal lecture provided
for the entire Hope community, the visiting scholar will meet
in a more intimate setting with Markets and Morality students. |
