Philosophy

Our vision for the management program at Hope College is to provide the best liberal arts-oriented undergraduate management education within the context of the historic Christian faith.

Our mission is to help develop alumni to do well and to do good. To achieve our mission, we strive to give our students the intellectual characteristics and dispositions necessary to help them become successfully engaged in influential professions, such as management, and make a positive contribution in the service of God and humanity (see diagram).

We believe that to do well and good, students must be equipped with certain intellectual characteristics and dispositions. We strive to enhance students’ decision-making skills to help them think clearly, persuasive dialog skills to help them communicate effectively, and the ability to learn to help them adapt to change. In addition, we strive to enhance students’ dispositions toward life-long learning to help them seek information and perspective taking so that students will be disposed toward making a positive contribution.

To achieve these outcomes, we desire to employ unique “perspectival” and experiential teaching and learning strategies enhanced by academic intimacy; that is, we seek to attain a high level of involvement with students in the form of personalized teaching and mentoring that emphasizes critical thinking grounded in theory and learning by doing. We also seek active, curious students, who by their engagement make our teaching and learning strategies even more effective.

To give our students the intellectual characteristics and dispositions required to do well and to do good, we strive to provide the best undergraduate management education in the world. We hope that you will join us in our effort so that together we can equip students to become successfully engaged in professions of influence and also to make a positive contribution in the service of God and humanity.
