MAY TERM OPPORTUNITY

RURAL EDUCATION
(EDUC488-02)
A study of rural community attitudes and characteristics which affect the local school with actual teaching in rural Northern Michigan.
Three Credits

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

This is an immersion experience in the rural education environment. Participants will spend three weeks working directly with students. They will have extensive opportunities to assist skilled educators and to plan and deliver their own lessons. Each participant will work directly with students all day long. Evening meetings will be held to share success stories and explore ways to address problems experienced during the day.

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE?

This class is open to all students who have completed Educational Psychology (ED 220/221) by the end of Spring Semester, 2008. Some students choose to take this course early in their program to get a better feel for what it is like to be responsible for planning and delivering lessons to students and to understand the many facets of being a professional educator. Others choose to take it shortly before their student teaching experience to have a chance to apply the methods they have learned and to build confidence for their upcoming placement.

HOW DOES IT HELP ME GRADUATE ON TIME?

While a few students use the Rural Education program simply as an elective for the classroom experience it offers, most choose to also use it as a substitution for a General Education major or minor requrirement. See Professor Yelding to explore how you might use the Rural Eduation Program to meet your graduation requirements.

WHERE?

For the first time, this year’s program will be held in the Covert Public Schools. Covert is a small rural community located about 15 miles southwest of Holland, Michigan. The total enrollment in the district is approximately 750 students. It is a community of very modest economic resources. It is rich in racial and ethnic diversity and has a long history of a spirit of self-reliance and pride in its traditions.

LODGING?

Program participants may choose to make arrangements to stay on-campus/in cottages during May Term or opt to make other arrangements to stay in the Greater Holland Area.
