“Participating in events like the Rosebud’s waicipi (pow wow) and listening to elders speak about their heritage gave me a greater understanding and appreciation for the Native American Culture. And, the natural beauty of South Dakota was spectacular!” Another student exclaimed, “It was a chance to spend quality time in the classroom and turn my Hope experiences into real life teaching experiences. I never dreamed three weeks could have such a powerful impact on my life.” Amy – Elementary

LIVERPOOL, UK
- for either June Term or Student Teaching Experience
An exciting opportunity to travel to Liverpool, England, where Elementary, Secondary and Special Education program students will teach in British schools and take courses from their Hope professors.

While in Liverpool, the Hope students will reside and board at Liverpool Hope University, a sister college with which Hope has had a long and fruitful relationship. The city of Liverpool served as the “2008 Cultural Capital of Europe” and provides many off-campus activities. Additionally, students will take weekend trips to London and Edinburgh, Scotland, which includes an excursion to the Highlands.

"Imagine a month of being fully immersed in British culture…living, traveling, observing, and teaching in the rich history and culture of England. The Liverpool May Term allowed me to see the vastness of education beyond the confines of my own frame of reference and a glimpse of what teaching in another part of the world is. Let your imagination run wild and consider the world of education in Liverpool."
Ryan – Secondary

"The experience I had in the Rural Education Program was invaluable to me because I learned more about my future career, social skills and myself. The first day of being in a classroom, I was totally immersed in my longawaited experience of actually being in front of a classroom teaching. From then on, both my students and I were learning from each other academically and socially. I believe they have taught me so much more
than I could have ever taught them in the three weeks we had together. This experience was an eye-opener to the
reality and different realms of teaching. I would definitely recommend this experience."

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE SCHOOLS
- Student Teaching Experience
Students who wish to student teach in an overseas setting, may find the
perfect opportunity through the Department of Defense Dependents Schools.
Hope College has established a relationship with the DoDDS that enables
student teachers to complete the student teaching experience overseas.
The Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) is a worldwide school system, operated by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) in more than a dozen foreign countries. Their mission is to provide quality education for eligible children of the DoD military and civilian personnel on official overseas assignments. The personal experience of learning about other people and cultures is one of most important things in the preparation of viable citizens in our global neighborhood.
This Student Teaching Program provides that experience. If you participate in a student teaching program with DoDDS, you will have the opportunity to teach in an intercultural setting to meet your institution's goals and expectations for the student teaching program. You will not only learn to teach but as you teach, you'll learn about a different culture. Many DoDDS student teachers have returned to the United States with fond memories of countries and cultures they had previously only read about.

Dominican Republic - Student Teaching Experience
Doulos is looking for leaders who desire to teach creatively and experientially, while encouraging students to follow Christ in all circumstances.
Students completing the Elementary Education certification program who wish to student teach in an overseas setting, may find the perfect opportunity in the Dominican Republic. Hope College has established a relationship withthe Doulos Discovery School in the Dominican Republic and is able to send student teachers there in both the Fall and Spring semesters.

Private schools are abundant but are costly and therefore only largely available to the wealthy. The public education system is lacking nationwide, holding the country’s poorest in the cycle of poverty. Doulos was conceptualized as an opportunity for life-giving change to students from all walks of life, their families, and the surrounding community all through the lens of Christ’s revolutionary vision. The hope of Doulos and a reason for its inception is to create positive change, to meet a need by bridging the gaps of economic and religious separation that exist in the Dominican Republic, and move forward together to impact this country and the world for Christ’s Kingdom.
