Mrs. Kathy Herrick, principal at Douglas Elementary and Mr. Robert VanderZwaag, principal at Creekside Middle School in Zeeland were our guests.  They shared their views on portfolios, what should be included, paper versus electronic, and the role they play in the hiring process.  Areas covered were:

  1. resume and transcript
  2. scores from Michigan Tests
  3. certification information
  4. reference letters
  5. educational philosophy
  6. professional development (conferences attended, books read, membership in professional organizations
  7. samples from lesson plans, discipline plan, technology skills, communications to parents
  8. demonstrate knowledge of MEAP, Michigan Benchmarks, knowledge of Michigan, Yes and No Child Left Behind
  9. Pictures showcasing yourself teaching, interacting with students, creative units and activities you have developed
  10. Anything else that will help you stand out among all the other candidates

It was an informative and rewarding conversation!

One question, when and where do students learn about the MLPP?
