**MICHIGAN BASIC SKILLS TEST**

One of the requirements to being admitted into the Teacher Education Program
is to take & pass the Michigan Basic Skills Test.   

**Recommend taking test when you are enrolled in:  ED 220/221-Educational Psychology & prior to taking:  ED 225/226 - Exceptional Child  

*** the State offers the test four times during the year (once in each of the
following months - July, October, January, and April) -  see their website for
registration/test dates. Registration booklets are available in the Education Department office AND you can register on-line at www.mttc.nesinc.com

**CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK/FINGERPRINTING**

A criminal background check for teacher education students is currently required by several local school districts for students who are placed in upper level field placements. Subsequently, the Hope College Education Department now requires all education students to complete a criminal background check at the start of the semester PRIOR to their student teaching semester. Students must be fingerprinted under the Michigan Employment Code (SE) and register with the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (OAISD) who will release the results to the Education Department and to any district for which a student gives consent for the purpose of substitute teaching or employment.

**FIRST AID/CPR TRAINING**

Beginning on July 1, 2004, any individual seeking initial teacher certification must successfully complete a course in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and hold valid certification in these topics. Therefore, we are offering a class on-campus conducted by the American Heart Association:

Adult/Child CPR and First Aid Certification are required by the Michigan Department of Education for all teacher education candidates at the time of their recommendation to the State Department for a teaching certificate. Hope College offers two certification sessions each academic year for upper level education students. The certification completed on campus is valid for two years.
