I was born in McBain, Michigan, and spent my early years there. In high school our family moved to Grand Rapids, and I graduated from Kelloggsville High School. I am from a family of twelve children.

My education after high school consists of a BA from Calvin College, an MA from Western Michigan University and my Ph.D. coursework from Michigan State University. I retired from active teaching after having taught for twenty-nine years (grades Kindergarten through middle school). Besides working with student teachers, I teach courses for Davenport University. I am starting my eighth year of supervising student teachers and it's a wonderful way to work with aspiring teachers.

I am married, the mother of three children, (one deceased) and seven grandchildren.
