Elementary:

ED221-Educational Psychology
minimum 2
hours/week; 22 hours total
This initial field experience provides students with the following benefits:  1) it helps them decide if they want to commit themselves to a career in teaching; 2) it allows them to connect their new knowledge and skills to the real world of practice by describing and explaining in oral and written language what they are experiencing in weekly placements; and 3) it encourages reflection on how their own style of learning and teaching might be expanded and/or developed.  Students are expected to participate fully in the classroom - working with students one-on-one, in small groups and helping out the mentor teacher in a variety of ways.  The key here is interpersonal interaction.
ED281-Literacy I (Preschool-3rd Grade)
minimum 2 hours/week; 24 hours total
Literacy I is an in-depth examination of literacy issues which begin at birth and develop through the third grade.  The four language arts - reading, writing, listening and speaking - are studied to guide the prospective teacher through a developmentally appropriate, constructive analysis of emerging literacy.  Students enrolled in the field placement component of this course will spend two consecutive hours per week working with a mentor teacher in his/her preschool, kindergarten, first, second, or third grade classroom.  Students will spend the majority of their time in the classroom during language arts instruction.
ED283-Literacy II (4th-8th Grade)
minimum 2 hours/week; 24 hours total
The emphasis in Literacy II is the transitional reader - the child in grades 4-8 who is moving beyond the often simpler narrative text to chapter books and content subject textbooks.  Pre-service teachers in the placement will spend a minimum of 2 hours a week in a language arts setting or in a content subject class into which the language arts are integrated. Students will be expected to teach two lessons and conduct a case study of a struggling reader.
ED311-Elementary Curriculum & Methods
minimum 4 hours/week; 50 hours total
This is the pre-student teaching field placement for elementary certification.  Full-group instruction is the emphasis in the Curriculum and Methods/Classroom Management field placement.  Students are expected to plan and teach a variety of lessons to large and small groups in any content area.  Students can also do morning or afternoon routine activities and transitions; teach basic lessons; create a center; read aloud; and participate in other activities which the supervising teacher deems appropriate.  Students will need to complete journal activities which will involve observing lessons, and interviewing teachers. Students will create and teach two formal lessons. In the middle of the semester the students will have 1 1/2 weeks where they will be in class 4 times per week.
ED385-Teaching of Foreign Language in the Elementary School
(Spring semester only) minimum of 12 hours total per semester
A coordinated, supervised field placement in an elementary Foreign Language classroom.

Secondary:

ED286-Secondary Block
2 hours/week; 24 hours total
This is the first course students take after they have been accepted into the department.  They have now committed themselves to being teachers in middle or high schools.  Opportunities to get involved in every aspect of the classroom activity is preferred:  small/large group presentations, monitoring group work, lesson planning and teaching. Students are expected to create a direct instruction lesson plan for use in the field placement class.
ED361-Secondary Principles
40 hours total across the semester
This is a required, pre-student teaching placement for secondary certification.  This is the final education class prior to student teaching so students are expected to take a teacher role in the classroom. Students are expected to participate fully in classroom activities, especially lesson plan development and delivery. Although the experience will involve some initial observation time, students should become increasingly more active in participating in the daily rigors of teaching.
Students in ED361 will be in secondary classrooms
that coincides with their major.
ED322-Teaching of Social Studies in the Secondary School
(Fall semester only)
minimum of 12 hours total per semester
A coordinated, supervised field placement in a secondary Social Studies classroom.
ED324-Teaching of Mathematics in the Secondary School
(Fall semester only)
minimum of 16 hours total per semester
A coordinated, supervised field placement in a secondary Mathematics classroom.
ED332-Teaching of Science in the Secondary School
(Fall semester only)
minimum of 12 hours total per semester
A coordinated, supervised field placement in a secondary Science classroom.
ED381-Teaching of English in the Secondary School
minimum of 12 hours total per semester
A coordinated, supervised field placement in a secondary English classroom.
ED387-Teaching of Foreign Language in the Secondary School
(Fall semester only) minimum of 12 hours total per semester
A coordinated, supervised field placement in a secondary Foreign Language classroom.

Special Education:

ED226-Exceptional Child
minimum 2 hours/week; 24 hours total
This placement provides ALL teacher education candidates an opportunity for interaction with persons with sensory, emotional, physical, and/or cognitive challenges, as well as gifted and talented and/or at-risk individuals.  It allows the application of knowledge and theory, provides opportunity for the development of professional skills in real-life settings and guides in the selection of teaching as a profession.

ED242-Introduction to Emotional Impairments (Spring Term only)
2
-3 hours/week; 22-24 hrs. total

Placement with emotionally impaired students in traditional (K-12) and non-traditional settings.  This experience will provide opportunities for individual and small group instruction, management, and observation.  A regularly scheduled seminar will be provided to integrate the placement experience with appropriate theoretical and conceptual models.
ED254-Introduction to Learning Disabilities (Fall & May Term only)
minimum 2 hours/week; 24 hrs. total
As the first course in the sequence for learning disabilities majors, Introduction to Learning Disabilities explores the characteristics of learning disabilities and their effects on the lives of individuals.  The related field experience provides an opportunity to synthesize course content and observe how it plays itself out in the school setting.  Although this course is required for learning disabilities majors, it also provides students in the general education program with a concrete understanding and skills to deal with the wide range of student needs found in today's classrooms.
ED357/358-K-12 Learning Disabilities/Emotional Impairments (Spring Term only)    T/Th a.m. or M/W p.m. - 4 hours/week; 40 hours total

Hope students majoring in Emotional Impairments or Learning Disabilities complete a sequence of courses which address assessment, remediation, instructional design, and behavior management for students with disabilities.  The field experience is a vital component of this block as it provides an opportunity for students to apply knowledge and skills acquired in previous classes.  Responsibilities include: Teaching a minimum of 6 lessons to large or small groups; Completing a case study; Attending professional meetings; Interviewing the teacher; Incorporating technology into teaching when possible; Observation by college professor. (T/Th. a.m. OR T/Th. p.m. OR M/W p.m.)
