Major and Minor Requirements

Students seeking teaching certification at the secondary level must declare and complete requirements in an academic major and minor area of study. State certification tests (MTTC) must also be passed in order to receive endorsements in these areas. When planning for the major and minor, the student may want to coordinate courses with requirements for the General Education liberal arts curriculum.

Major - Secondary

All prospective secondary teachers are required to have an academic major of at least 30 credit hours in one discipline. (Pass/fail courses may not be counted in the major.) In planning for a regular major, minimum requirements of both the appropriate department and the state must be considered. The State of Michigan requires a minimum of 30 credit hours regardless of the departmental requirements. The student must meet the higher requirement of either the state or the academic department.

Minor - Secondary

The prospective secondary teacher may complete a minor by earning 20-24 credit hours in one discipline of 24 credit hours. (Pass/fail courses may not be counted in the minor.)

PLEASE NOTE: Departments are constantly reviewing their courses and overall curriculum. They may change course numbers and credit hours or add new courses. Students are encouraged to monitor changes and consult with their advisors so as not to be at risk if these changes influence your planned program.
