Major Requirements

The Hope College Education Department offers an elementary provisional teaching certificate with endorsements in the special education areas of Learning Disabilities and Emotional Impairments. Students may major in one or both disability areas, and also must complete all courses required for elementary certification. Upon finishing both certification and endorsement requirements, students must take and pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) for both Elementary and Learning Disabilities or Emotional Impairments.

Unlike other disciplines where students complete most major coursework in that major/minor department, students who declare majors in either of the special education areas take most courses within the Education Department. Coursework from the Psychology and Sociology Departments is also included.
