DANCE FORMS

Understand ballet technique.

Includes basic positions and directions of the body in ballet; and basic ballet terminology.

Includes types of axial and locomotor movement in modern dance; and basic modern dance terminology.

Understand the use of space, time, and energy in modern dance.

Includes elements and interrelationships of space, time, and energy in modern dance.

Understand styles and techniques of jazz dance.

Includes the movement elements common to jazz dance; and basic jazz dance terminology.

Understand square, North American folk, and social dance.

Includes terms, types, characteristics, and dance patterns associated with square, North American folk, and social dance.

Understand folk and ethnic dance from other countries.

Includes terms, types, characteristics, and dance patterns associated with folk and ethnic dance.

TECHNICAL ELEMENTS

Understand the structure of, and relationships among, the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems.

Includes major skeletal structures of the body; the functions of muscles, tendons, and ligaments used in given dance movements; and the inter­relationships among the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems in movement.

Apply knowledge of kinesiology and biomechanics.

Includes the basic principles of kinesiology and biomechanics and their use in the analysis of movements in dance.

Understand types and causes of common dance injuries and methods for their prevention.

Includes common dance injuries and their causes; safety requirements for dance classrooms; and the proper sequence of warm-ups for preventing dance injuries.

Understand common medical problems associated with dance; procedures for the care of dance injuries; and appropriate program modifications.

Includes types of common medical problems associated with dance; procedures for the immediate care of dance injuries; and appropriate program modifications for various medical problems.

Includes meter signatures; the values of notes and rests, and their relationships to rhythmic patterns; and tempo and dynamic markings.

Includes types of simple and complex compositional forms.

Includes types and uses of accompaniment; and factors to consider in selecting appropriate accompaniment.

Includes the elements of time and space in movement; and the relationships between time and movement, and space and movement.

Understand devices and structures used in choreography.

Includes appropriate procedures for warming up, cuing, and attending to final details before a dance performance; and responsibilities of personnel involved in performance production.

Includes the characteristics and functions of costumes; application of make-up techniques; selection of appropriate costumes and types of make-up for various situations; and types and uses of props.

Understand the uses of stage areas, scenery, lighting, and sound equipment in dance.

Includes terminology related to stage areas; types and uses of scenery; types, characteristics, and functions of lighting, sound equipment, and design materials; and the use of design concepts in lighting and sound.

Includes factors involved in planning a budget for dance productions; and procedures for box-office, house, and stage management.

Understand the history of ethnic and folk dance.

Includes important persons and developments in the recording and preservation of ethnic and folk dance; and common themes and characteristics of primitive dance.

Understand the history of ballet.

Includes important persons, characteristics, and developments in early ballet; and important persons and developments in ballet during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Understand the history of modern dance.

Includes important persons and developments in early modern, late twentieth century modern, and postmodern dance; and major philosophies in modern dance.

Understand the history of tap dance and jazz dance.

Includes important persons and developments in tap and jazz dance.

Identify significant dancers and choreographers and their contributions to dance in modern American society.

Includes significant dancers and choreographers and their contributions to dance in modern American society.

Analyze the relationship between dance and society.

Includes the role and characteristics of dance in other cultures and other historical periods; ways in which dance and society influence each other; ways in which dance communicates ideas; and ways in which examples of dance in modern American society reflect the contributions of other cultures.

Analyze the relationship of dance to other art forms.

Includes elements common to all art forms and ways in which art forms can be interrelated to express an idea.

Identify significant trends, values, and schools of thought in dance.

Includes significant trends and values in the philosophy of dance; and significant schools of thought in dance and their characteristics.

Understand dance critique and evaluation.

Includes the functions, characteristics, and steps in the process of dance critique and evaluation.

Understand ways to integrate dance into other areas of the educational curriculum.

Includes ways to integrate dance into other subjects; ways to interrelate dance with visual and other performing arts; and the use of dance as a teaching tool in other curriculum areas.

Understand appropriate teaching methods for dance education.

Includes types and characteristics of teaching methods unique to dance education; skills and concepts appropriate for dance education at different grades; dance activities appropriate for secondary dance education; and types and characteristics of assessment methods unique to dance.

Understand specialized dance instruction.

Includes types and characteristics of students with special educational needs; learning objectives dance activities and movement activities appropriate for students with special educational needs; and ways in which the dance teacher can help other teachers use dance in their instruction.
