The Folk Harpist's Friend
A rocking harp stand

Hazel L. Lawson
In summary, the following is a review of the project, its results, and it's outlook for the future. Overall, the project has been an overwhelming success. The stand successfully supports a harp and when the mechanism is operated, the harp rocks back into the harpist's arms. All of the problems have been relatively minor and are not terrible difficult to deal with. It has met all of the design requirements with no trouble.
Chronologically, the design of this product went quickly and smoothly. The design started out with the exercises assigned in class, which were very helpful in choosing the correct path in the concept development of the stand. Over fall break, Dan Speer and Hazel Lawson spent three days in the woodshop at Argent Fox Music sawing, gluing, sanding, and finishing the final product. The stand was also completed well under budget and ahead of schedule. The total cost was $35 to manufacture and will probably sell for between $75 and $100.
The final design consists of a rectangular top with a rocking section in the center. The rocker is supported by two dowel rods and locked into place by two pins. The unit is approximately knee high and has some degree of adjustability for different harpists.
The results are very promising. As can be seen in the "results" section of this report, every design requirement was met or exceeded. The stand is approximately knee high, but can be adjusted. It supports the harp very well. The harp falls back into perfect playing position when the pins are pulled. This meets the number one requirement and makes this design unique from all others on the market. Overall, this project can be counted as a success.
I am very proud of the work that I did on this project. Dan Speer is currently thinking about producing the stand as a permanent addition to his line of harp accessories. Overall the future looks bright for this folk harp stand. It would be a happy addition to any living room, bringing music and beauty for years to come.
