Primus Yellowstone Light® Stove Balancer

Jessica J. Berglund

Summary:

The Primus Yellowstone Light® Stove Balancer was created to balance the stove on uneven ground, and while the stove is in use. The balancer was designed with three legs out at 45 degrees for stability, made out of treated lumber for durability. These legs were made out of ˝ inch doweling, which was angle cut and then nailed and glued to a block. The block rests against the tank with two strips of 1/8 inch doweling to align it. The sack that actually holds the stove butane tank was hand sewn out of 85% Anstron® Nylon/ 15% Lycra® Spandex, and a polypropylene strap adds stability and tightens the leg blocks against the tank. The legs are permanently attached inside the sack, but the entire thing is able to get wet or dirty. Most importantly for a backpacking application, the entire device collapses into a small bag, and is lightweight. The entire materials cost of the prototype was only $5.67, though the final cost would have to include the labor of hand sewing the sack. The final design was successful in meeting every design requirement.
