Electric Motor Lab
Additional Information

Notes:

  1. Additional supplies and equipment useful in constructing the electric motor.
  2. Equipment

    Notes

    Soldering Iron and Solder

Use to reconnect accidentally broken coil wires.

    Light oil, or WD-40

Apply a small amount to shaft to help increase speed.

    Clear nail polish

Use to re-insulate accidentally over-stripped magent wire, preventing unwanted electrical contact.

    Digital Multi meter

Useful for trouble shooting non-functioning motors.

    Compass

Use to establish polarity of motor magnets when trouble shooting.

    6V lantern battery

Use to start finicky motors to see if they work at all.

  3. When working with a large group it is useful to have a supply of extra parts. The motor involves a number of small and breakable components. Some loss is inevitable.
  4. Common Problems and troubleshooting. If the motor does not work, here are some common problems to consider.
  5. A small cardboard box is recommended for holding the completed motors. They damage easily when transported. The box protects the motor from damage.
