English 113 Test-out Procedure

PURPOSE:

To provide an opportunity for students with exceptional high school training in writing to gain exemption from and credit for English 113 by examination.

COST:
$75.00 payable in advance to Hope College.

STRUCTURE:
The test-out procedure has three parts--
1. a written exam (see below),
2. a review of two papers submitted for college or high school courses, one of which must be a research paper.
3. a test on library research methods (directions will be supplied after parts 1 and 2 have been completed successfully)

TIME:
The written exam will be offered during the first week of each fall semester, or may be taken by appointment; inquire at the English Department Office, Lubbers 338, or call extension 7620. The exam will not take more than three hours.

SCORING:
Credit will be awarded to those whose exam demonstrates a quality equivalent to a "B+" in English 113.

DESCRIPTION OF THE EXAM:
The exam will consist of three sections--

1. The student will decide whether, and how, to rewrite and correct or improve a group of sentences which may have weaknesses in grammar, punctuation, or syntax.
2. The student will compare and contrast, in a paragraph or two, differences in style and audience of two given prose passages.
3. The student will write a 500-700 word essay in response to an assigned topic. Consideration in grading the essay will be given to its depth and freshness and to the soundness of its logic, organization, unity, development (generalizations and illustration), syntax, diction, and style.
