English 113 Test-out Procedure
PURPOSE:
To provide an opportunity for students with exceptional high school
training in writing to gain exemption from and credit for English 113 by
examination.
COST:
$75.00 payable in advance to Hope College.
STRUCTURE:
The test-out procedure has three parts--
1. a written exam (see below),
2. a review of two papers submitted for college or high school courses, one
of which must be a research paper.
3. a test on library research methods (directions will be supplied after
parts 1 and 2 have been completed successfully)
TIME:
The written exam will be offered during the first week of each fall
semester, or may be taken by appointment; inquire at the English Department
Office, Lubbers 338, or call extension 7620. The
exam will not take more than three hours.
SCORING:
Credit will be awarded to those whose exam demonstrates a quality
equivalent to a "B+" in English 113.
DESCRIPTION OF THE EXAM:
The exam will consist of three sections--
1. The student will decide whether, and how, to rewrite and correct or improve
a group of sentences which may have weaknesses in grammar, punctuation, or
syntax.
2. The student will compare and contrast, in a paragraph or two, differences
in style and audience of two given prose passages.
3. The student will write
a 500-700 word essay in response to an assigned topic. Consideration in grading
the essay will be given to its depth and freshness
and to the soundness of its logic, organization, unity, development (generalizations
and illustration), syntax, diction, and style.
