Degree Requirements

Hope offers English majors and English majors with a creative writing emphasis.

The English major focuses on the study of literature, and is designed for students interested in teaching, continuing on to graduate school in literature, editing and publication, and for students who just love books and want to improve their skills in reading and writing.

The English major with a creative writing emphasis is designed for students interested in pursuing creative writing in graduate school, and those who simply enjoy writing fiction, poetry, satire, creative nonfiction, or drama, and want to develop their skills further.

The English depatment also works in conjunction with the Education department to prepare students for careers in elementary and secondary teaching. Course work, field experiences, student teaching, and lots of conversation about and modeling of effective teaching help our graduates feel confident as they begin their own careers in the classroom.
