    Prizes for Writing and Scholarship

  • Bowdoin Prize for Essays in English, Harvard, 1999. Harvard's most prestigious prize, awarded annually since 1791, "the Bowdoin" includes $3,000, a medal, and recognition at the Harvard Commencement Exercises by the Office of the President. It recognizes the best scholarly essay written by a student at Harvard during the academic year. Received for "'O Captain! My Captain!': Walt Whitman's Abraham Lincoln."

  • Two Helen Choate Bell Prizes for Essays in American Literature, Harvard, 1998 (my two anonymous submissions tied). Awarded annually since 1921, the Bell Prize, which includes $2,500 and a certificate, recognizes one or two scholarly essays written by a student at Harvard during the academic year. Received twice in 1998 for "Making the Bourgeois American: Benjamin Franklin and Olaudah Equiano" and "Walt Whitman, James Russell Lowell, and the Rhetoric of Exclusion."

  • William Harris and Gertrude Weld Arnold Prize for Essays on Bibliography, Harvard, 1998. The Arnold Prize annually recognizes the best essay written a Harvard student on the value of book-related scholarship with a $1,000 prize.

  • Phillip Hofer Prize for Book Collecting, Harvard, 1996. The Hofer Prize, administered by the Houghton Library staff, annually recognizes two students at Harvard for their achievements as bibliophiles; it provides $1,000 for the acquisition of additional books.

  • Helen Choate Bell Prize for Essays in American Literature, Harvard, 1995. Awarded annually since 1921, the Bell Prize, which includes $2,500 and a certificate, recognizes one or two scholarly essays written by a student at Harvard during the academic year. Received for "A Question of 'Character': Visual Images and the Nineteenth-century Construction of Edgar Allan Poe."

  • Crimson and Gray Prize for Fiction, Saint Joseph's University, 1989. A $250 prize awarded annually by the editiorial board for the best work of fiction published in Crimson and Gray.

  • Fellowships, Grants, and Scholarships

  • Appointed Towsley Research Scholar, Hope College, 2003-2007. Awarded to one or two third-year faculty members, the appointment provides a one-semester sabbatical and four consecutive $4,000 summer research grants.

  • Lilly Foundation Curriculum Development Grant, 2006, A $4,400 grant to support the development of a senior seminar on the exploration of vocation.

  • Lilly Foundation Curriculum Development Grant, 2004, A $4,400 grant to support the development of a first-year seminar on the exploration of vocation.

  • Mellon Foundation Curriculum Development Grant, 2002-04. A $3,000 grant to support the integration of technology and information resources into upper level courses.

  • Mellon Foundation Summer Grant, 2002. A competitive faculty development grant of $3,200 in support of summer research activities.

  • Mellon Foundation Summer Grant, 2001. A faculty development grant of $3,200 in support of summer research activities.

  • Whiting Foundation Fellowship in the Humanities, 1998-99. A national dissertation completion fellowship of $15,000 plus tuition remission awarded annually to about 10 advanced graduate students in the humanities at Harvard.

  • Graduate Society Fellowship, Harvard, 1997-98. A $5,000 award that reduces the graduate teaching load by one course per semester; it is given annually to about 20 graduate students at Harvard.

  • Summer Research and Travel Grant, Harvard 1997. A $1,000 grant to conduct research away from Harvard; used for research at the Schomberg Library of African-American History.

  • Graduate Fellowship, Harvard, 1993-95. Included tuition remission, benefits, and a $12,000 stipend per year with no service requirements.

  • Graduate Assistantship, University of Miami, 1991-93. Included tuition remission and a $10,000 stipend per year with a teaching requirement of one course per semester.

  • Presidential Scholarship, Saint Joseph's University, 1986-90. A reduction of $5,000-8,000 per year from tuition.
