Myra Kohsel has worked for Hope College since 1973, first part-time with the Art Department in the former Rusk Building, then expanding her hours to full time by working for both the Art Department and the Communication / History office. During the summers she became the College's first floater-working for the Provost's Office, the Registrar's Office, the Switchboard, the Mailroom, and the Foreign Languages Department, as well as the Art and Communication / History departments. In 1979, she found a full-time home in the English Department (taking a two-year sabbatical in 1982-83 to work as her church's secretary).
Over the years her job has changed from typing syllabi, course handouts, research papers, and books on a Selectric typewriter to acting as department assistant, supervising five student assistants. She is advisor for the English minors, co-coordinator for the College's Visiting Writers Series, and coordinator of the Distinguished Artists Award in Writing.
Myra enjoys creating counted-cross stitched Christmas stockings for her 15 beautiful, brilliant, wonderful grandchildren. With her husband Alfred Jr, she enjoys antiquing, gardening on their two and one-half acres, and traveling. Her personal essays on the people and places of her childhood have been published in a local newspaper.
