Essay Accepted for Publication

Kathleen Verduin just received news that her essay "Bread of Angels: Dante Studies and the Moral Vision of Charles Eliot Norton" has been accepted for publication in Dante Studies. Kathleen's work on Dante's reception in America has been meeting success at every turn.

Stephen Hemenway presented the keynote address at the 50-Year Reunion of his high school class, in Worcester, MA. Stephen was president of his class and editor of the school paper, so he had stories to tell!

Faculty Presents Plenary Address

John Cox presented a plenary address at the Shakespeare and Renaissance Ethics Conference at Yale University last weekend. John's address was titled "Shakespeare's Prayers," a study of the many prayers offered by characters in the plays.

Rhoda Janzen read from her memoir at the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan on Monday night, as a finalist for the Thurber Prize in American Humor. Rhoda's Mennonite in a Little Black Dress has now been on the New York Times Best Seller list for 6 months.

Faculty Member's Book Reviewed

Heather Sellers will be in the New York Times Book Review this Sunday. Her new memoir, You Don't Look Like Anyone I Know, will be reviewed there--a major coup for any author. Heather's book also received a 4-star review in People. The publication date for the book is October 14.

Dianne Portfleet, co-director with Martie Bultman of Hope's chapter of Mortar Board, whose Hope College chapter was named best in the nation at the summer national Mortar Board conference.

Hope English grad Kyle Delhagen will be starting a new job as a Chaplain in a residency program at the Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Kresge Award Winner

Our grad, Steve Hughes, has received a Kresge Award. The fellowships, each including a $25,000 prize funded by the Kresge Foundation, are awarded annually to visual, literary and performing artists and are the largest such awards available to individual artists in metropolitan Detroit. Ernest Cole's article "Post-Apartheid South Africa as Emerging Dystopia: An Examination of Phaswane Mpe's Welcome to our Hillbrow" appears in the newest issue of SAFARA: Revue Internationale de Langues, Litteratures et Cultures (Senegal).

Curtis Gruenler's article on C.S. Lewis and Rene Girard has been accepted for publication in Christianity and Literature.

Heather Sellers's"Victory Gardens" was a finalist for the Narrative 2009 story contest. Heather also gave an early January reading in New York City, appearing with the vocal group Soho Voce.
