Peter Schakel came to Hope in 1969 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was appointed Peter C. and Emajean Cook Professor of English in 1984.

His teaching and research specialties are eighteenth-century English literature, especially verse satire and Jonathan Swift, and the life and works of C. S. Lewis (see his website C. S. Lewis, Literature, and Life). He and his colleague Jack Ridl have recently published Approaching Literature in the 21st Century, a culturally diverse introduction to fiction, poetry, and drama.
