Second (Foreign) Language—First Year Competency
Competence in a second language continues to be one mark of an educated person. As society becomes more international and multicultural, conversational ability in a second language is also becoming an increasingly valuable skill in society. The requirement encourages students to build upon second language skills gained in high school and to achieve at least a basic conversational facility in a second language. First year college-level competency is the minimal requirement. Successful completion of the second semester of first-year language (courses numbered 102, 122, 172) will therefore satisfy this requirement. All students, however, must take at least one semester of a second language and are encouraged to continue with advanced study of that language. Successful scores on AP and CLEP exams may also be used to satisfy this
requirement. |
