General Education Resources for Faculty

The mission of Hope College is to educate students for lives of leadership and service in a global society through academic and co-curricular programs of recognized excellence in the liberal arts and in the context of the historic Christian faith.

As a liberal arts college offering education within the context of the historic Christian faith, Hope is a place of open inquiry, acceptance of intellectual challenge, rigorous engagement with hard questions, and vigorous but civil discussion of different beliefs.  Hope seeks to develop the growth of each student as a competent, creative, and compassionate person.  The General Education curriculum furthers the mission of Hope College by equipping students to engage in informed critical reflection concerning themselves and the world, and preparing them for further study and for a life of learning, service, and productive activity.

Currently, with the help of the Teagle Systematic Improvement of Student Learning grant, we are enhancing and applying the results of assessment of Hope’s curriculum with the specific goals of:

  1. Assessing how courses contribute to students’ proficiency in Hope’s skills and habits of learning.
  1. Helping faculty move students from compliance to curiosity, and
  1. Helping students to strengthen their writing.

In Summer, 2010, course development grants aimed at fostering curiosity and strong writing will be available. Details about the grant program are available here.
