This course is an introduction to English civilization and history from origins to the Glorious Revolution. It will focus on events and personalities in Britain up to 1688, by integrating the histories of the various peoples of the British Isles and by concentrating on a handful of critical themes and issues: the evolution of peculiarly English styles of kingship and law; the growth of Parliament; the role of religion in English life; the development of London; Britain's sometimes stormy relationship with the rest of Europe; and the major features of social, cultural and economic change.
