DISCUSSION

Students are responsible for reading the relevant portions of Palmer and before class, becoming familiar with the relevant terms, considering the study questions, and being prepared to participate in class discussion about these or related questions.

For the Wednesday discussions, it is not enough to say what you "think" or "feel" about the subject or texts; this trivializes complex issues. In the discussions it will be necessary to demonstrate evaluation of facts as well as opinions of people in the past about those facts. A meaningful discussion presupposes a true synthesis of your own values, knowledge and insights combined with the values, knowledge and insights of historical personalities.

By the end of the semester, through analysis and discussion of documents, students will encounter the complete range of problems historians have dealt with and the methods they have used. On several occasions we will also consider a view on contemporary civilization provided by important cultural critics, in particular philosophers and writers of fiction.
